THE SORDID DETAILS Buck-A-Roo EP
The Sordid Details should be more well known than they are - they're not really a typical self-released tape band. Following their Pop-O-Matic and Cop-U-Later tapes, and their tracks on the Six Of The Best compilation album, here's another six powerful, witty and well-played pop songs which are kinda rude in parts. One of these is a rather insulting song called The Best Thing To Come Out Of France, which makes quite a few uncalled for suggestions about French people. So if you find words with sexual or lavatorial connotations offensive, or if you're French, don't buy this tape! Costs £4.00 from The Sordid Details, 6 St Chads Road, Rubery, Birmingham B45 9DJ. Cheques to The Sordid Details.
DIE SACHE 10 Years of Maximum Power and Pop
Die Sache have been around since about 1985, and it shows, as they are still playing typically mid-eighties style indie-pop, much of which sounds a bit like what I've heard of the Television Personalities. The best track, to me, is probably Shadow. The rest isn't bad either, but is kinda twee. Write to Markus Bella, Elly-Heuss-Knapp Str. 19, 72074 Tubingen, Germany.
VARIOUS Farnborough Groove Strikes Back (Home And Away)
A 24 track tape of bands from Farnborough and the surrounding area. Most of the songs are good (some better than others of course, but no total failures). It's an improvement on a lot of compilation tapes (apart from the truly excellent Aliens Ate My Babysitter comp tape, which is now unfortunately unavailable). The bands are The Perfect Circles, Skipper, Who Moved The Ground?, Cuckooland, The Four Marys, Headcopter, Vox Pop, Bloom, Parmaviolet, Crazyface, Little Stabs Of Happiness, Headnoise, Epicureans, The Rileys, Sideways, JC Regulator, Twister, Buzzwagon, Redefining Beautiful, West One, Toys In The Attic, Doo The Moog, Elephant Talk and Bash. Send £2 to Pete Cole, 29 Busk Crescent, Cove, Farnborough, Hampshire GU14 0BL.
VARIOUS On A Weekend
A 14 track tape of bands from the Oxford area. Features familiar names The Nubiles and The Bigger The God, plus lesser known (to me at least) bands Charlie Don't Surf, Gibson Automatic, Steam Radio, Oh Suzanna Joanna, Honey, Wired, The Daisies, Chudd, Twist, Lurch, Shard and Steelworker. £3.50 sounds a bit steep for a comp tape, but some profit has to be made, as 50% of profits go to Night Shelter. Also, I think this tape is worth £3.50, as many of the tracks are dead good. Available from Russell Falkner, 6 Honeyham Close, Brize Norton, Oxford OX18 3PZ.
VARIOUS Truckstops On The Road To Mecca (Violet)
The second tape-sampler from Violet Music. Mostly noise-pop and punk-pop from similar sounding bands - The Waiting List, The Automatics, The Bruise Violets, Bombay Mice, Cato St. Conspiracy and Menticide, plus an electronic instrumental from Blue And Grey. Cato St. Conspiracy also have a quieter song on this tape. £2 from Violet Music, Flat 3, 32 Crown Street, Newark, Notts NG24 4UY.
MY FAVOURITE THINGS Syd demo
More of a psychedelic pop thing than their single, but brilliant all the same. Syd is due to be released as one half of a split single with The Nocturnal Babies, another Coventry band, and Daydream Violence is going to be released as a flexi by 25 Records. Meanwhile, to hear the songs before they're released, plus another two songs, Spaceman and She's A Ghost, write to My Favourite Things, 62 The Park Paling, Coventry CV3 5LL.
