Welcome to Bliss/Aquamarine - alternative, underground and indie music.

I RECORDS

i records is a new label set up by the Ché people. Whereas Ché releases tend to be on the indie-rock/indie-pop/punk-pop side of things, music on i is more strange/experimental. Early releases on i included CDs by Füxa, Kirk Lake and Exit. The Füxa and Kirk Lake albums were both reviewed in previous issues of Aquamarine. I haven't heard the Exit one but I don't think I'm missing much if their monotonous, droning Turn Me On Dead Man is anything to go by. Three new i releases are a 7" single by Drone, a 12" single by Piano Magic and a new Füxa album.

Drone, despite their name, are (thankfully) not much like Exit. This is predominantly instrumental music, which sounds like a cross between film/TV incidental music and dance music. Instrumentation is provided by keyboards, drum machines and assorted classical instruments. The only words in Blow x Blow are those in the title. Turn + Twist doesn't have any lyrics.

Piano Magic's 12" is Wrong French, with Non-Fiction and General Electric With Fairylights on the B-side. According to the press release, the band have 22 singers, one of whom is 12 years old. This is strange experimental music with spooky sound effects, but there are also melodies, unlike a lot of experimental stuff. Much experimental music sounds like the band are making noise for kicks, and making it up as they're going along to boot, but this has structure to it, it's cleverly done.

Following Füxa's 3 Field Rotation compilation album is Very Well Organised, a CD or triple LP of previously unreleased material. This has eleven Moog/organ driven space instrumentals which are far from usual, but are also rather relaxing and laid back. The band's name is pronounced "Foosha", in case you were wondering...
